The portrait artist will lead portraiture workshops with Henderson-Hopkins students

WHAT: Before an assembly of Henderson-Hopkins students, Johns Hopkins University President Ron Daniels will join Maya Rockeymoore Cummings, widow of the late Congressman Elijah Cummings, and artist Christopher Batten, to honor the legacy of Cummings by unveiling his portrait, which was commissioned by Johns Hopkins University for the Homewood campus. The artist will also lead portraiture painting workshops with the students.
WHEN: 9 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 20. A 30-minute portrait unveiling ceremony followed immediately with children’s portrait painting workshops.
IN CASE WEATHER DELAYS SCHOOL OPENING: Media can first attend the children’s painting workshops at 2:30 p.m., followed by the ceremony at 3 p.m.

BACKGROUND: The portrait of Cummings is part of a university-wide effort to recognize and commemorate through public art a diverse group of leaders who made indelible marks on our institution and our world. Given his historic career, Congressman Cummings was a natural choice to be one of the first portraits – alongside Edith Windsor, another civil rights icon. The Cummings portrait is set to be formally installed at the university’s Milton S. Eisenhower Library in April.
